After suffering a stroke in 2018 Paul acquired a brain injury. Paul was supported by our colleagues at Fieldbay – a leading provider of specialist nursing care for people in South Wales who have complex needs and require a high level of care, support and rehabilitation.
After suffering his stroke in 2018 Paul spent three and half months in Moriston Hospital and then just over six months in Neath and Port Tolbert Neuro ward as part of his rehabilitation.
Paul was then referred to Fieldbay and transitioned into Heathfield Apartments for the next stage of his recovery journey.
Fieldbay’s Brain Injury services focus on rehabilitation and development of people’s skills as they step down from hospital on the next step of their recovery journey.
Increasing skills as part of his recovery journey
Supported by an experienced and dedicated team, the focus was on supporting Paul to regain skills for daily living, setting short, medium and long-term goals to relearn skills in personal care, shopping, cooking and looking after his environment.
Paul explains: “Support at Heathfield Apartments has helped me get back my independence, teaching me to cook, multitask and giving me support when I’ve been pretty down. The team took me out places to shop and I was completing shopping tasks, cooking tasks, exercising with physio and managing my finances, all preparing me for independent living.”
With consistent approaches and strategies developed, Paul increased his skills, understanding his environment and learned to complete tasks independently.
The staff helped me to be independent again and gain more confidence.

Steps Towards Independence
Paul’s journey has been hard, but with his determination and the right clinical and emotional support around him, he has started to rebuild his life. At Heathfield Apartments he was supported to recover both physically and emotionally, with the right support when he needed it.
Paul has now moved into his own flat and lives independently without the need for support. He undertook the painting and decorating of his new home himself and is settling in well. He still enjoys coming back to Heathfield Apartments to socialise.
